Smart Cars offers the best of fuel economy in its compact version

The first thing that people think of when they think of Italian cars is that they are flashy and make great Sports models. However, what they consider to be typical Italian sports car is not what the Smart Cars are all about. These Smart Cars were made keeping in mind to be small and compact. At the same time they continue to remain great lookers and turn heads wherever they are driven to.

These cars might not be great performers in the arena of cars. But, they were never ever meant to be that. What they were meant to be were great fuel saves and get the buyer a great amount of efficiency in their working.

Smart Cars began in the year 1993 and were a joint venture between Daimler Benz and a Swiss watchmaker called Swatch. This car manufacturing unit was moved to Germany and renamed Smart.

The USP of Smart Cars was that they were made to be city cars and were built with great quality and expertise in mind. They had to be economical in the fuel that they consumed, great at handling and maneuvering on narrow and congested city roads and easy to park as well.

The City Coupe from Smart Cars was able to meet all of these parameters. The small cars that Smart Cars they had to go ahead and create a tridion which is a safety cell in order to prove to their customers that they will be able to withstand a collision with a bigger car. This was the silver and black portion in the body of the Smart Cars. The way it was made was from the layers of steel in the body of the car. The way the cells in these Smart Cars were designed was to go ahead and absorb the brunt of the collision and redistribute the energy so that the impact wasn't so great for the occupants seated within. The side impact in Smart Cars was shielded with the steel door beams and the reinforced axles.

Very soon, the fame of these wonderful Smart Cars began to spread and people began to look forward to the wonderful city driving experience that it offered them. This made Smart Cars go in for an expansion and introduce more models which were the Roadster and Roadster Coupe in the year 2001 and then the Forfour sedan came about in the year 2004. However, the customer's reactions to these weren't as expected. They weren't really so very gung-ho about them. This brought about a financial crunch for Smart Cars.

The bestselling car from the Smart Cars model continues to remain the Fortwo that was first rolled out in the year 2006. It is now in the second generation of production. It has sold more than 770,000 units and in 36 countries. The advent of Smart Cars into the United States is certainly going to be a great business outcome.
